When we go about having a child we can name them anything we want. Anything we decide is humorous, lovely, and perfect for the little newborn, and never see the irony of their name, or what their name truly sounds like. This si the beginning of a large list of fanciful hilarious names. There are actual names. If you own one of these names please contact me.

Questions I've always pondered

Question - What does it really sound like in the dog world?
Question - Can cats sense everything?
Question - Can cats purring really mend bones?
Question - Even though they deny it, did Coke have coke in it?
Question - Is black the absence of color or all the colors?
Question - Why do cockroaches look like that?
Question - Why do so many people hate cockroach?
Question - How was tofu invented?

Do you have any? Maybe we could help eachother.

Get that soda can open

How to open a soda can

Drinking a can of soda is one of the few truly international activities in the world. There are a numbers of sodas out there. Are they sodas or pops or soda pops or a Coke, a Pepsi, a etc. Whatever you call them or how you drink them, its nice to sit with some friends in the heat, and pop a nice cold can. Hear the sloshy thunk of the 2 cans as you toast your buddy and anyone else choosing to be together at this time.

Needed

A long pointed instrument.

Step 1

Take the can and hold it in such a fashion that your thumb is in the middle of the can below the mouth. Make sure you hold the can tight, but not tight enough to dent it.

Step 2

Place the thumb of your opposite hand and place it directly on the rim of the can in front of the mouth. The pad of the thumb should be pushing against the side of the can and pointing toward your other thumb.

Step 3

Place the nail or the -pad of your middle finger under the "tab" of the can. Pull the tab in such a fashion that you are trying to touch your thumb and middle finger together. 3/4 of the way, stop applying pressure with your thumb, and bring your middle finger straight down till the tab hits the rim of the can. With your thumb, push the tab back into place. If you prefer, but it is very dangerous, you can now push the broken piece of tin farther back into the can. Many prefer to have no obstructions in the mouth of their soda.

Step 4

Sometimes it becomes necessary to use a tool to open a can of soda. Hold the can as above, with the opposite hand you would use to hold the can normally. There are gadgets that are specificly designed to open a can of soda, but very few people have these gadgets.

Step 5

Take a tool that is very skinny, think enough to pry something, pointy is preferable, and is at least 8 inches long. Your should be in the middle of the can, in the exact opposite as you were holding it to open it by hand. The rim where the mouth is should be directly opposite the part of the rim of the can, your thumb should be directly below this point.

Step 6

With the can where your fingers are pointing diagonally away from you, slide the tool under the tap till it hits the attachment in the center. Lift the tool up so that your thumb lowers and finally become stuck pointing down. Take your thumb and push it down the other way, and then replace it back to the original place it started.

Warning

The rim of the mouth is very sharp and will cut you easily.

A lot of charities will take the tabs of can to benefit many sick children. Please look into that.

Shakespeare Shakespeare Romeo and Julliet

Romeo and Juliet - Beautiful love story or diactic tale?

Shakespeare has developed a beautifully written love story that has nothing to do with love. The term star crossed has always been taken to mean fate, but and that they were meant to be - soul mates per se. The problem is that's not what the play is about, so it can not mean that either. The play is a didactic display of the danger of excess. Simply put - anything in excess is bad for you, no matter what it is. This is beautifuly illustrated by the friars speech when Romeo comes in to speak with him. He states exactly as I've just stated with a number of examples. So, in this context - star crossed is the X that most people put over the eyes of dead people when they draw them. The couple was destined to die, for they did not understand the idea of temperance, even in love.

So, what the answer? For a lot more plase see my associated content page on the side bar.

Business cards and Business Cards

I make it a habit to grab a business card from where I go. At the end of some stretch, I go through the cards and see what the cards are, where I've been to collect said card, and the company who gave me the card. It might be I'm keeping the card for a reason, or the reason has come and gone. Here are the businesses and cars that are in my wallet:

Syd Entel Gallaries

247 Mainstreet
Safety Harbor, FL 34695

www.sydentelgalleries.com

- A great little gallery in the quaint little town of Safety Harbor. Monthly art shows are shown at this beautiful gallery, as well as some of the most exquisite glass sculpture I've ever seen. I personally saw the "Vote Dr. Seuss for president" display of all of Dr. Seuss' prints. The curator/owner is Susan Benjamin, and she makes you feel at home as soon as you get there.

The Hollywood Summit Show

www.thehollywoodsummitshow.com

- An online extremem sports show. This was given to me by one of the photographers or the owner, not sure which. He filmed a friend of mine doing some trick riding, and I grabbed his car after the show.

Jos. A. Bank (Vewlery store)
Westfield shoppingtown Countryside
27001 US Highway 19 North
Suite 2010
Clearwater, FL 33761

- I stopped on here to check out some jewlery. Very nice people, but didn't have what I wanted.

Q
678 Douglas Avenue
Dunedin, Fl 34698

www.Qdunedin.com

- A great jewlery, handbag, and various gifts elegant store. The owner is wonderful, and will find just the right things, withjust the right colors. Not only is this a fullservice boutique, but you can also get a cup of starbucks coffee.

A few of the business cards that reside in my wallett right now. What cars are next? Which businesses will get free advertising, who knows.

Names, oh the oddities of names

Why does one person go by one name, and we know them by another? Where does the name transcend the normal, and become something of its own. Writers are notorious for this name changing situation. This is where the great psuedonyms came from:

Sam Clemmons becomes Mark Twain

Steven King becomes Richard Bachman

Charles Dodgson becomes Lewis Carrol

But what of those that had no choice of what name they went by? Who decided those things, and then suddenly went by some other name completely. Where did they come from, and why do we like them so?

Edgar Allan Poe - went by Ed.

F. Scott Fitzgerald went by Scot (notice the 1 T)

E. B. White went by E

William Faulkner went by Bill

Dr. Seuss was really Theordore Geisle and went by Ted

Charles Schultz went by Sparky.

Names are forever a fascination, for all the things that can happen with names, the making of the names, and the sheer oddity of names!!

Stay tune for the next Name post.....

The national tragedy of the Italian Earthquake feels very far away for many people on the other side of the Atlantic. Having lived in California, the power and destruction of earthquakes is quite familiar to me. This poem hits the emotions that we all feel in such a national disaster!

Gilligan's Island

Gilligan's Island is one of those great shows of the past, that can be watched again and again and again.

Gilligan's Island was created in 1962 and was canceled in 1967. It starred Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Bachus, Natalie Schaffer, Tina Louise, Russel Johnson, and Dawn Wells. Gilligan's Island showcased a a lot fot he 60's talent, as well as some of the no-name talent that went onto becoming a star. The show was based on a group of 7 people of all different classes, intellegence, and socio-economic background trying to survive on an uncharted island. LOST maybe?

Now that you are caught up with what the show is and who was in it, check out this poetry. This is a awesome tribute tot he great show that was Gilligan's Island:

Thomas A Beckett - His story

In Geoferrey Chaucer's Canterburry Tales the pilgrims were traveling to Canterbury. Why? To see the casket of Thomas A Beckett. He became a martyr when he was killed. He became a saint very soon after that. This very famous priest, martyr, saint, and all around good guy is such a major piece of history, you wonder why more people don't know about him.

Thomas A Beckett is one of those charachters who you can envision someone you know as. Thomas A Becket is a person we should all know more about. Thomas A Beckett is a person that is more than just a destination when he died.

Teaching - theaching in today's day and age

Teaching to the masses

Teaching to the masses is the way of teaching in today's day and age. What does this phrase mean?

It means teachers will teach to the general student. Not the top student. Not the bottom student. Btu the general average student, or as the grade depicts - the "C" student. The superior students will become bored, they will usually be able to figure out something to do while they wait for the class to go onto something different.

The bottom students, who are really the people we need to spend the most time on, haven't understood the last three things you've taught, they aren't going to ask the teacher any questions, and they aren't going to try harder unless they are asked and spoken to. In fact, most of the bottom students don't like school or teachers, and this teacher isn't much different as far as they're concerned. Teaching to this group would help the best, but they are the section that will, and probably have in their past, will slow down the class.

Teaching to the the masses does one thing: Raise up the middle to the upper, so that they can be bored with the new middle.

So who wins?

See the other "Teaching posts

teaching, teaching the masses

Teaching is a misunderstood, undervalued, and often under paid profession. Teaching is on the skids right now. It seems whenever there is money problems and there is unrest in the world, the first place to cut money is teaching.

Hasn't it been shown that the more educated people are, the less violent they are? So what are we doing?

The English language and its adaptability is phenomenal. Left handers unite

Left handers of the world

I’m talking to you people who have seen that your left hand works better. You decided a long time ago that your left hand was your hand, your strong hand, and now you have dealt with all the things that go with this little added piece of awkwardness.
Your coffee cup lettering is towards you, so you can read it. Nobody else needs to read that, right? The pad of your hand below your thumb always has ink on it. Tired of washing that yet? You write wrapped around the notebook in an odd way. Your letters never seem to lean toward the right. Most scissors don’t cut, and it’s seen as your fault.

You are how you are made. Yes, you aren’t like others-but that’s not bad.

Well there’s a whole world out there just for Left Handed people. Left handed people rule this little niche of the great wide web. Here are a few Left handed websites to help all the left handers out there:

E. Stephen Mack has created one of the largest Left handed sites I’ve seen. It is so comprehensive, I’m surprised not more people have seen it, wondered onto it, enjoyed it. Pleasse take a moment to looik into this great site.
http://www.42inc.com/~estephen/facts/lefthand.html

August 13th is Left Handers Day. For all the information on left handers and the day itself, this site is for you.
http://www.Lefthandersday.com

You have a lot of company out there. Did you think all the famous important people like Martin Luther King Junior and James Garfield were right handed? Here is a huge database of left handed people. This is a site put together by a PHD from Indiana. Please answer his hand preference questionnaire.
http://www.indiana.edu/~primate/left.html

You know there is an advantage to being left handed. Isn’t iot about time that everyone else has? Well it has happened. This link will take you to an article form ABC news about the advantages of a left handed person.
http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/story?id=498707

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a store where you could get all the things to help your left handed life? There is. From hand tools to kitchen gadgets. This is a left handed paradise – Enjoy
http://thelefthand.com

Are you left handed? Were you stopped from being left handed?

Left handed plight

The left handers have always been the low man on the totem pole. I’ve heard stories about people being forced to be right handed because the nun wanted all of her classes to look neat and tidy, and if there was someone writing with the “wrong” hand(it's not wrong its my left) it was more than she could stand.

I myself was robbed of a life with a left hand. I am left handed, but I write with my right hand. I am left handed!

Unbeknownst to me since I was too young, my teacher put my left hand in a sling to stop me from writing with that horrible left hand. I found this out by looking at a picture a friend of my parents took when they were at my school. I was given a sling contraption that pinned my left hand to my chest. Suddenly, I understood why my writing was so bad, and writing with pencils and pens have never felt “right”, it's because thy're suppose to be in my left hand.

What to do

Re-teach your left hand brain. You’d be surprised on how quickly it returns. You are a left handed person whether you like it or not. You have been turned right handed, so your brain has had to create underdeveloped neurons. Once you begin writing with your left hand you will reestablish old thoughts and ideas into your left hand brain. Within a few days of studying and working on it, you will find you’re doing great, and can right with your left hand again!

Your brain remembers how to write, and slowly your left hand will be your better hand. Little by little your left hand will come back to its old self before they decided you shouldn’t use it. You will be back to that feeling that everyone feels when they pick something up with the correct hand. It’s a truly liberating experience.

Has this happened to you? See the Left handers of the world article.
