“The difference between the right word and the wrong one, is the difference between lightening and a lightening bug. “ – Samuel Clemmons (Mark Twain)
The great wordsmith, Mark Twain, makes a very good point in this little quote. When we know the correct word to say at the right time to convey the exact ting we want to say, there is no confusion, there is no misunderstanding of words, and there’s no odd looks because of the word you said or the thought you tried to convey.
What most people don’t realize is that a letter comprised of great words used perfectly, began the country that we call home. We are founded upon the words of people, and knowing those words allow us to understand the world that that document has created. Realize that through words everything is possible. Words are the only way we have to communicate with our fellow people. By using the correct group of words at the right time, you can change people’s opinions, the place where you live, and even the world. History has proven this idea time and time again. To say you know how to speak is to be able to put the words together in an intelligent and meaningful way, so that when they come out of your mouth they sound intelligent, intense, and profound. Unfortunately, many people believe that because a word means something simple, it is superfluous to use. IN FACT – That word IS the correct word to use, where the other is merely a substitute.
An example:
you got hit – angry
person cheated on you – hate
person cheated on you with your mom, but lied and said it was your best friend – detest
person raped and killed your mom – abhor
There is no room for movement in this group. They can not be used interchangeably, and if you don’t know what the last word means – look it up.
